Though Thanksgiving has come and gone, the joy of giving back to others is still in the heart of many. Parents are often looking at ways to show their children the gift of helping others and giving to those less fortunate. Many schools, churches, and clubs look to engage in such activities as well. In addition to parents looking for ways to involve children, there are those whose kids are grown or those who don’t have kids yet and would like to help make the holidays brighter for others.

Giving Back for Christmas

There are many ways to get involved within the community, including the ones below.

Adopt a Family

Angel tree gifts or adopting a family are a common practice for churches and other organizations. The gifts you provide to participating families are likely to be the only ones they receive. It is a great feeling to know that you are the reason others had gifts to open. You can also organize collecting gifts for the Salvation Army or other organizations for your church or place of employment.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

Give back by offering your time as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. They depend on volunteers to collect money which can bring in up to $30/hr. The money collected is vital to providing groceries and/or shelter to a family or individual in need.

Visit Local Seniors

This is another great opportunity to involve the kids or make a family event. Activities such as playing games, eating lunch, or simply providing conversation to those in senior communities are valuable ways to give back. Particularly for the Christmas season, activities can center on tree decoration and Christmas caroling.

Gift Wrapping

Some look at the gifts they have purchased and shudder at the thought of having to wrap them all. However there are those who love to wrap gifts and have a knack for it. Consider offering as a service to help others out. You can also ask for donations for this service to be given to a local charity.

Gift Back

Christmas is more than receiving gifts. Giving back should be a part of the holiday season for us all. It is important to understand that while we can’t all give financially, we can give to others in different ways.
