Among the many things that you can do with burlap is printing. This is an inexpensive and creative way to create a vintage decoration. Printed burlap can be for a sign, a custom made picture frame, upholstering, or transforming a plain bag into something a bit trendier and eye catching. You have a blank canvas to be as creative as you want. Your ideas for printed burlap will make special gifts for holidays, birthdays or any other special occasion. There are two popular ways to print on burlap:
Printer Method: Burlap can go through an inkjet printer as long as special precautions are taken to prevent jamming. Freezer paper is commonly used to allow this process to go as smoothly as possible. Freezer paper should be cut just a tad wider and longer than the burlap and ironed to the burlap. Once you find the image or text and adjust it to fit on the burlap, the burlap can be fed into the printer to complete the transfer.
Transfer Paper: Iron-on transfer paper works on burlap just as it does on cotton t-shirts. The key to a seamless process is to keep the iron hot. With the image or text transferred onto the transfer paper and cut, it can then be ironed on to the burlap. It is very important to use a very hot iron (with no steam) and to iron the image or text again as the paper is peeled off. This process will keep the image tightly secured to the burlap as you remove the backing.
Once you have your printed burlap, you can add lace ribbon or other décor or add fabric paint. Stencils can also be used for large printing jobs. It is an easy and cost effective way to upholster worn chairs or to create pillow or cushion covers.
