What it's for

Frost and seed protection. Drape over beds ahead of a cold snap. The open weave holds warmth against the soil while letting light, air and rain through, so it can stay on for days without smothering seedlings.

Erosion control. Pin across slopes and freshly seeded banks. It holds soil in place while grass establishes, then breaks down into the ground rather than needing removal.

Raised bed and planter lining. Line the base of raised beds and wire baskets to keep soil in and let water drain freely.

Tree and shrub wrapping. Wrap root balls for transport, or trunks over winter to protect against sunscald and browsing.

Decor and events. At 40 inches wide this cuts down neatly into table runners, backdrops and craft panels.

Why 7 oz

7 oz is the lighter of the two common burlap weights. It drapes and conforms to uneven ground better than 10 oz, which is what you want for garden work. Choose 10 oz instead if the fabric needs to bear weight or lie perfectly flat, as with upholstery backing or a wedding aisle.

Handling notes

Jute sheds loose fibre when first unrolled — shake it out before use. Store dry; damp jute will mildew and lose strength. Fully biodegradable and compostable at end of life.
